About Taj Mahal Quartzite
Taj Mahal Quartzite is the stone people ask for by name, and for good reason. It is the stone that made quartzite a household word in Texas kitchens: a warm, creamy base the color of unbleached linen, threaded with soft veins in beige, honey and pale gold that drift across the slab rather than cut through it. It reads as calm from across the room and as intricate up close. Of everything in our yard in Buda, it is the slab we sell the most of.
Where our Taj Mahal Quartzite comes from
Not every slab sold as Taj Mahal is the same material. The name has been borrowed by look-alike stones from several countries, and the differences show up after installation, in how the surface takes an edge and how it wears. Our Taj Mahal is quarried in Brazil at the original Taj Mahal quarry, the source the stone was named for. We import it direct from the quarry, so when an island or a long run of counters needs to match, ask us to pull sequential slabs from the same bundle.
Honed, not polished, and why that matters
We stock Taj Mahal Quartzite in a honed finish at 3 cm. Most Taj Mahal on the market is polished, so this is worth a moment. A honed surface is ground smooth but stopped before the high gloss, which leaves a soft, matte sheen closer to the way the stone looks in the quarry. On a pale, warm stone like this it does three useful things: it takes the glare out of a big island under kitchen lighting, it hides fingerprints and water spots that show on a polished top, and it makes the veining look painted into the surface rather than sitting under glass. Honed quartzite still needs sealing, and it will show an oily mark a little more readily than a polished top until it is sealed, so plan on a good impregnating sealer at installation.
What it is best for
Kitchen counters and islands first, full-height backsplashes second, and after that almost anywhere a hard, light, warm surface is wanted: bathroom vanities, fireplace surrounds, shower walls, a waterfall edge on a bar. Because the color sits between white and beige, it works with both white and stained cabinetry, brass and black hardware, and warm or cool wall colors, which is a large part of why designers reach for it when a client has not decided everything else yet. The one place we would steer you elsewhere is a busy commercial floor, where a denser, darker stone will hide traffic better.
What fabricators and homeowners ask us
Is it real quartzite?
Yes. Taj Mahal from this quarry is a true metamorphic quartzite, which is why it resists scratching and etching in a way marble cannot. A steel knife should not mark it. If a "Taj Mahal" scratches with a blade, it is a marble or a dolomite wearing the name.
Does it stain?
Sealed, no. Like all quartzite it is slightly porous, and an unsealed slab will drink oil. Sealed at installation and re-sealed every year or two, it shrugs off wine, lemon and coffee. The Natural Stone Institute publishes independent guidance on sealing stone countertops that is worth reading before a fabricator templates the job.
How much does it vary?
Less than most exotic quartzites. Some bundles run creamier, some carry more gold, and the veining is looser or tighter from block to block, which is why we encourage you to come and stand in front of the actual slab before you commit. Photographs flatten it.
Seeing Taj Mahal Quartzite in Buda
Our yard is at 5229 FM 2001 in Buda, on the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio, and we sell slab by slab to fabricators, builders and homeowners from Georgetown down to San Antonio. Walk-ins are welcome Monday–Saturday (Sundays by confirmed appointment) — book an appointment and someone can pull the slab you want out of the A-frame and set it in daylight.
