Chantilly Lace Quartzite is named for exactly what it looks like: a creamy white ground worked over with fine, layered gray veining that runs across the slab in delicate, undulating lines, one above the next, like the threads in a piece of lace. Nothing about it is heavy. The veins are thin and close together, they all move in the same direction, and the effect from a few feet away is of soft gray movement across white, more texture than pattern. It is the calmest of our Brazilian quartzites and one of the most versatile.
Most exotic stone veins wander. Chantilly Lace veins run. That directionality gives a fabricator options: laid lengthwise along a run of counters the veins carry the eye down the kitchen; turned across an island they make it look wider; book-matched at a waterfall end they meet in a chevron. It also makes seams easier to hide than on a stone with random movement, because the grain gives you a line to follow. Our Chantilly Lace Quartzite is quarried in Brazil and arrives in Buda polished at 3 cm. Polished gives the white ground a soft glow and makes the gray threads read crisp rather than smudged; a honed surface would blur the lace effect that makes this stone what it is. Some slabs run whiter, some carry a warmer cream; some have tight veining throughout and some open up into wider bands in places. Look at the specific slab.
Chantilly Lace is regularly mistaken for a soft white marble, and that is the point of choosing it. It is a true quartzite: it does not etch under lemon or vinegar, it does not scratch under a dragged pot, and it takes daily kitchen use the way marble will not. It is slightly porous, like all quartzite, and should be sealed at installation and re-sealed every year or two. The Natural Stone Institute publishes independent guidance on sealing stone countertops that is worth reading before the fabricator templates the job.
A white or cream kitchen that wants softness rather than drama. A primary bathroom where the same slab can run from vanity to shower wall to tub deck and tie the room together. A fireplace surround in a pale living room. It pairs with warm whites, light oak, sage and soft gray cabinetry, and with brushed brass or nickel. Against very dark cabinetry it can look washed out; there it wants a stone with more contrast, like Mont Blanc.
How white is the ground?
Cream-white rather than paper-white. Next to a pure white cabinet it reads a touch warm, which most people prefer to a clinical match.
Will the veins line up across a seam?
Better than on almost any other stone we stock, because they run straight. Ask for consecutive slabs from the same bundle and have the fabricator orient them the same way.
Is it natural?
Yes. The veining is real mineral, no two slabs repeat, and the pattern is not printed or engineered; it is what came out of the ground in Brazil.
