Azzurra Bay is a quiet stone that does a lot of work. The ground is a soft gray-white, and running across it on a consistent diagonal are fine threads of darker gray — closer to a linen weave than to the rivers you get in a marble. It comes to Buda leathered rather than polished, which is unusual for a stone this pale and is the main reason people choose it. It is the calmest slab in our yard, and one of the easiest to live with.
Most pale slabs arrive polished, which is what makes a light kitchen glare under downlights and show every fingerprint on the island. Leathering is a brushed finish: the surface is textured rather than mirrored, with a soft matte sheen and a slight relief you can feel with your palm. On Azzurra Bay it does three things. It takes the glare out, so the stone reads as color rather than reflection. It hides fingerprints, smudges and water marks far better than any polished surface will. And it brings the gray forward, so the veining looks drawn into the stone rather than laid under glass. The trade-off is honest: a textured surface holds crumbs and dust more than a slick one, so it wants a cloth rather than a quick swipe of the hand.
Our Azzurra Bay is quarried in Brazil and comes to the yard leathered at 3 cm. Every slab we stock is 3 cm; we are not carrying 2 cm at the moment. The movement runs on a strong diagonal, which matters more here than on a random-patterned stone: laid one way the veining crosses a counter, laid the other it runs with it, and an island will read differently from each side. Look at the actual slab with your fabricator before the layout is set, and ask us for consecutive slabs if you want the pattern to carry across a seam or down a waterfall.
Kitchens where the stone is meant to sit back rather than perform. It works as a full run of perimeter counters, as an island in a room where the cabinetry or the backsplash is the event, and it is a sensible choice for a family kitchen for the fingerprint reason above. It pairs easily — pale oak and walnut, white, gray and greige cabinetry, black and brushed brass hardware. Because it is light and matte it also suits a bathroom, where polished stone can feel cold underhand, and a full-height backsplash, where a gloss finish bounces the downlights straight back at you.
Quartzite is hard, and it does not etch when lemon or wine sits on it, which is the practical difference between quartzite and marble. It is not stain-proof, though: it is porous, so it wants a good impregnating sealer at installation and a check every couple of years. A leathered surface takes sealer a little differently from a polished one, so tell your fabricator the finish before they seal it. Day to day it wants a pH-neutral cleaner rather than a general kitchen spray. Is leathered harder to keep clean?
Easier for marks, very slightly more work for crumbs. It hides fingerprints and water spots far better than a polished top; the texture just means you wipe with a cloth rather than swiping with your hand.

Is it gray or is it white?
Gray-white, and which one it looks like depends on what sits next to it. Against white cabinetry it reads gray; against gray cabinetry it reads pale. Bring a cabinet door to the yard and put it on the slab.
