Phoenix Black Granite is fire in stone. The ground is a deep, saturated black, and running across it in horizontal bands are streaks of rust, copper and flame red, cut through with threads of cream and white that crackle across the surface like lightning. Book-match two slabs, as in the images on this page, and the bands meet in the center to form a single dark landscape with a burning horizon through the middle. It is the most dramatic dark stone we carry, and no photograph quite does it justice.
Phoenix Black is a granite, not a quartzite, and for a stone this dark that is the material you want. Granite is an igneous rock, cooled from magma, and it is one of the hardest and least porous surfaces you can put in a kitchen. It does not etch under acid, it shrugs off heat, it resists scratching in normal use, and a dark granite hides everyday marks better than any pale stone. It needs less sealing than quartzite; a good impregnating sealer at installation and a check every couple of years is plenty, and on a dense black like this some fabricators skip it altogether. The Natural Stone Institute sets out when a stone countertop needs sealing and when it does not.
Our Phoenix Black Granite is quarried in India and comes to Buda polished at 3 cm. On a black stone, polished is the finish: the gloss turns the ground to a mirror and makes the red and copper bands look lit from behind. A leathered or honed finish would soften the drama, and drama is what this stone is for. The movement runs in horizontal bands, so orientation matters; laid lengthwise the bands run the length of the counter, and on a book-matched island they mirror across the seam.
A statement island with plain perimeter counters. A bar top, wet bar or outdoor kitchen, where granite's heat and weather resistance count and the black ground stays handsome. A fireplace surround, where the red banding looks like what is behind it. A feature wall in a dark, moody room. It pairs with black, charcoal and deep green cabinetry, with brass, bronze and copper hardware that picks up the veins, and with warm wood. Against white cabinetry it becomes the only thing in the room, which is either exactly right or too much; bring a cabinet door and see.
Granite fabricates cleanly and takes any edge profile well; a mitered waterfall edge on Phoenix Black is especially effective because the bands wrap the corner. It is heavy and dense, so allow for that in cabinet support on long overhangs. Ask us for consecutive slabs if the job is a book-match.
Does the red fade?
No. It is mineral color inside the stone, and granite is unaffected by sunlight, which is why it works outdoors.
Does it show fingerprints?
Polished black shows them, like any polished dark surface. A microfiber cloth handles it. If that bothers you, ask about a leathered finish on a future order.
Is it really black?
Yes, a true deep black between the bands, not charcoal. Under warm kitchen light the red glows and the black goes deeper.
