Patagonia Crystal Quartzite looks like a slab of frozen weather. The ground is a pale, milky white with the glassy translucence of packed quartz crystal, and sweeping through it are great arcs of darker mineral, charcoal, brown and rust, that curve across the slab like the edge of a storm front. Where the dark bands run, the stone is dense and crystalline; where the white runs, light gets into it. Book-match two slabs and the arcs meet in the middle to form a shape that people will stand in front of for a while.
We stock two Patagonias, and they are not interchangeable. Patagonia Gold is the warm one: amber, honey and rust in a mixed crystal ground. Patagonia Crystal is the cool one: a white crystal field with dark, curving mineral bands and almost no gold. If the room is white, gray, black or blue, this is the Patagonia you want. If the room is walnut, cream and brass, look at the Gold. Both are exotic; only one will be right for a given kitchen.
Our Patagonia Crystal Quartzite is sourced from India and arrives in Buda polished at 3 cm. Polished is the finish that shows the crystal: the gloss lets light into the white zones and makes the dark bands look wet. Because the pattern is so large in scale, one slab can look completely different from the next even within a bundle, and the arc might sit high on one slab and low on another. This is a stone to choose by the slab, in person, and to template with the fabricator standing in front of it.
Like Cristallo, the white crystal zones of Patagonia Crystal are translucent, and the stone backlights beautifully: the white glows and the dark arcs go to silhouette, which is one of the most dramatic effects natural stone can produce. It needs a translucent substrate and LED panels rather than strips, and a fabricator who has worked translucent stone before. Un-lit, in ordinary daylight, the crystal still has a depth that flat white stones never manage.
Patagonia Crystal is a true quartzite and resists scratching and etching, but it is a complex stone with open crystal pockets, and some slabs are reinforced on the back at the quarry for transport and cutting, which is normal for this family and not a defect. A good fabricator will plan sink and cooktop cutouts away from the most open zones and seal thoroughly at installation. Natural stone holds its finish longest when it is cleaned and sealed to suit the material; the Natural Stone Institute publishes free, independent guidance on sealing stone countertops that is worth reading before the job is templated.
A kitchen island, where the arc becomes the centerpiece. A bar or wine room, lit. A powder-room vanity or a fireplace surround where one dramatic surface is the whole idea. Keep everything around it simple, flat-panel cabinetry in white, charcoal or a deep blue, and let the stone lead.
