About Le Blanc Quartzite

Le Blanc is the white that people are usually picturing when they say they want marble. A bright, clean ground with soft gray veining drifting through it, and in places a cooler gray-green thread that keeps it from looking printed. It has the calm of a Carrara and the working life of a quartzite, which is a combination that does not come up often.

Marble looks, quartzite behavior

The reason people put marble in a kitchen is the look, and the reason they regret it is etching: acid dulls the surface wherever lemon, wine or vinegar sits, and no sealer prevents it, because etching is a chemical reaction rather than a stain. Quartzite does not do that. Le Blanc gives a very similar white-and-gray read and then behaves like the hard stone it is — it will not etch, it will not scratch under normal kitchen use, and it takes heat without complaint. If someone in the household cooks and someone else wants marble, this is the compromise that does not feel like one.

From Brazil, leathered, 3 cm

Our Le Blanc is quarried in Brazil and comes to the yard leathered at 3 cm. Leathering is a brushed finish — textured rather than mirrored, with a soft matte sheen. On a white stone it does two useful things: it takes the glare out of a bright kitchen, so the counter reads as stone rather than as a reflection of the ceiling lights, and it hides fingerprints and water marks far better than a polished white will. The trade-off is honest — a textured surface holds crumbs a little more than a slick one, so it wants a cloth rather than a swipe of the hand.

Where Le Blanc belongs

Anywhere you were going to put marble and then thought better of it. A full run of perimeter counters with an island to match, a full-height backsplash where the veining can run uninterrupted, a bathroom vanity, a shower surround. It sits with almost anything — white, gray and greige cabinetry, pale oak, walnut, black or brass hardware — because it is the quiet element in the room rather than the loud one. It is also the safer choice in a kitchen where the counters are wanted light but the household is not careful.

Working with it

Quartzite is hard and non-etching but it is porous, so Le Blanc wants a good impregnating sealer at installation and a check every couple of years — a white stone shows a stain more readily than a dark one, so do not skip it. A leathered surface takes sealer a little differently from a polished one, so tell your fabricator the finish before they seal it. Day to day it wants a pH-neutral cleaner rather than a general kitchen spray. Our natural stone care guide covers the water test that tells you when sealing is due, and the Natural Stone Institute sets out when a countertop needs sealing and when it does not.

Questions we get about Le Blanc

Is it really as white as marble?

Close, and cleaner than most Carrara, which carries more gray overall. Where it differs is the veining — quartzite veining tends to be softer and less graphic than a Calacatta. Put the two side by side before deciding.

Will it stain?

Not if it is sealed and the sealer is kept up. Oil and red wine are what to watch on any white stone; wipe them rather than leave them, and do the water test once a year.

Why leathered rather than polished?

Because a polished white counter under kitchen downlights is a mirror, and it shows every fingerprint. If a job needs polished, ask us and we will tell you what we can actually get rather than steer you to what is on the floor.
