Cristallo Oro Quartzite, from India

Most people have seen the white Brazilian Cristallo. Ours comes from India, and the difference is the gold. Where the Brazilian material is white on white, the Indian Cristallo Oro carries a warm gold veining that gives the slab depth and warmth, so it works in kitchens with brass, walnut or cream rather than only in cool, all-white rooms. We stock premium-grade Cristallo Oro Quartzite, and in a translucent stone grade matters twice over: clarity and even crystal structure count, because any cloudiness or dark inclusion shows twice, once on the surface and once again when the slab is lit from behind. Every slab in the yard is 3 cm.

Backlighting: the question everyone asks

Yes, it can be backlit, and yes, people ask us about it constantly. This is the stone that turns a kitchen island, a bar front or a bathroom vanity into a light fixture. A few practical notes for anyone planning it:

The slab has to be mounted on a translucent substrate, not the plywood or MDF a fabricator would normally use. LED panels sit behind it; strips leave visible hot spots. Because the stone is 3 cm, the light diffuses evenly across the surface without any grid showing through. Warm-white LEDs (around 3000K) bring out the gold; cooler light flattens it. And the effect is strongest at night with the room lights low, so the same slab reads as a clean, elegant white top by day and a glowing feature after dark.

Backlighting is not required to justify the stone. Un-lit, under normal daylight, Cristallo Oro Quartzite still has a depth to it that flat white surfaces never manage, because light enters the crystal and comes back out.

Hard, but treat it as a special stone

Cristallo is a true quartzite, so it resists scratching and etching the way quartzite should. It is, however, a stone with visible crystal structure, and some slabs carry natural fissures that follow the crystal lines. These are not cracks and they do not weaken the slab, but they are part of the character, and a fabricator who has not worked translucent quartzite before should see the slab in person. Like any quartzite it needs sealing at installation. The Natural Stone Institute publishes independent guidance on sealing stone countertops that is worth reading before the job is templated.

Where it makes sense

Islands, bar tops and vanities where it can be seen and, ideally, lit. Full-height backsplashes behind a range. A feature wall in an entry or a powder room. It is less suited to a busy family kitchen's perimeter counters, not because it will fail but because a stone this striking deserves the spot where people will look at it. Think of it as the piece the rest of the room is designed around.
