About Amazon Green Quartzite

Amazon Green is the most saturated stone in our yard. The ground is a deep emerald that swings toward teal as the light moves across it, and running over that on a long diagonal are broad veins of white and pale gray, with occasional flecks of rust where iron sits in the rock. It is a statement slab. It will not sit quietly behind anything, and green at this depth is genuinely hard to find in a natural stone.

Green in a natural stone, and why it is rare

Almost every deep green countertop surface on the market is engineered — pigment mixed into resin, the same color from one end of the slab to the other. Amazon Green is not that. The color is mineral, formed in the rock, which is why it varies across a slab and why it will never fade, chalk or go patchy in sunlight the way a pigmented surface can. The practical consequence is that no two slabs match and no photograph will tell you what a particular one looks like. If you want green and you want it to be stone, the choice is narrow, and this is the top of it.

From Brazil, polished, 3 cm

Our Amazon Green is quarried in Brazil and comes to Buda polished at 3 cm. On a stone this saturated, polished is the right call: the gloss takes the emerald down deeper and makes the white veining read as light rather than as chalk. A honed or leathered finish would mute it, and muting is the last thing this stone needs. The movement runs on a strong diagonal, so orientation changes the result completely — laid one way the veins sweep across an island, laid the other they run its length. Decide that with the slab in front of you, and ask us for consecutive slabs if you want the pattern to mirror across a seam or a waterfall.

Where Amazon Green belongs

One surface, doing the talking. An island with plain perimeter counters. A bar or wet bar. A fireplace surround, a feature wall, or a powder room where a guest is meant to stop for a second. It is very good with walnut and other warm woods, with brass and bronze hardware that picks up the rust flecks, and with black. Against white cabinetry it becomes the only thing in the room, which is either exactly the plan or too much. What it does not want is busy cabinetry or a second patterned material competing with it.

Working with it

Quartzite is hard and it does not etch, so lemon, wine and vinegar will not leave the dull marks they leave on marble. It is porous, though, so it wants a good impregnating sealer at installation and a check every couple of years. Polished dark stone shows dust and water spots more than a pale one — a microfiber cloth handles it. Green also shifts noticeably between warm and cool light, so look at the slab under something close to the lighting it will live under rather than under a warehouse fixture. Our natural stone care guide covers sealing and everyday cleaning, and the Natural Stone Institute sets out when a stone countertop needs sealing and when it does not.

Questions we get about Amazon Green

Will the green fade?

No. It is mineral color inside the rock, not a pigment, and it is unaffected by sunlight. That is the practical argument for a natural green over an engineered one.

Is it too much for a whole kitchen?

Usually, yes. It works best as one surface with something plain around it. If you want green everywhere, come and stand in front of a full slab first — it reads very differently at counter scale than in a photograph.

Does every slab look like the images here?

No, and that is the honest answer for any natural stone. The vein pattern and the depth of the green vary block to block. Pick the actual slab.
