Avocado Crystal reads as black across a room and as green up close. The ground is a very dark forest green, and cutting through it are bold white veins with a crystalline edge — thick and confident rather than fine. Some pieces carry warm amber and gold in the quartz where the light catches. It comes to Buda leathered, which on a stone this dark matters more than it does on a pale one.
Polished black is the surface that shows everything — every fingerprint, every water spot, every smear of the cloth you just cleaned it with. Leathering is a brushed finish: textured rather than mirrored, with a soft matte sheen and a slight relief you can feel. On Avocado Crystal it takes the glare off, hides marks that a polished dark top would broadcast, and lets the white veining read as part of the stone rather than as a reflection sitting on top of it. The trade-off is that a textured surface holds crumbs and dust a little more than a slick one, so it wants a cloth rather than a swipe of the hand.
Our Avocado Crystal is quarried in India and comes to the yard leathered at 3 cm. The veining is bold and irregular rather than directional, which makes it more forgiving to lay out than a strongly diagonal stone — but it also means block-to-block variation is significant here. What the white does on one slab is not what it does on the next. Choose the actual slab, and ask us for consecutive slabs if a seam or a waterfall needs the pattern to carry.
An island, a bar top, or a feature wall where a dark surface is wanted but black granite would be flat. It suits a moody kitchen — deep green or charcoal cabinetry, walnut, unlacquered brass, black hardware — and it works outdoors, where quartzite handles sun and weather without fading. Against pale cabinetry it becomes the anchor of the room. What it does not want is a second heavily veined material in the same sightline.
Quartzite is hard and it does not etch, which is the practical difference between it and a marble. It is porous, so it wants a good impregnating sealer at installation and a check every couple of years, and a leathered surface takes sealer a little differently from a polished one — tell your fabricator the finish before they seal. Day to day it wants a pH-neutral cleaner rather than a general kitchen spray. Our natural stone care guide covers the water test that tells you when sealing is due, and the Natural Stone Institute sets out when a countertop needs sealing and when it does not.
Is it green or is it black?
Both, depending on the light. In a bright room it reads as a deep green; under warm evening light or in shadow it reads close to black. If the green is the reason you want it, look at the slab under light like the room it is going into.
Can it be backlit?
Some pieces carry translucent quartz and some do not, so this is a question about the individual slab rather than about the stone. Bring it up before you choose one and we will hold a light behind the piece you are looking at.
Does leathered make it harder to clean?
Easier for fingerprints and water marks, very slightly more work for crumbs. It is the finish to pick if the counter will be used rather than admired.
